The nature of the intertidal zone is that of constant change. The biota that lives in the rocky intertidal zone are hardy and built to endure some of the most extreme ocean conditions. Plants and animals in this region must be able to endure long periods of time where they are either entirely submerged in a high wave action zone, or survive hours on end above sea level with little to no water available to them.
